A Tribute to the Undead

It is currently Hallow's End in WoW, so the cities are decked out in jack-o-lanterns, there is a Wickerman outside Undercity and the Headless Horseman has taken up residence in the Scarlet Monastery Graveyard for the season. Trick'or'Treating has been all the rage, and so far I have won myself a wand that turns people into bats and skeletons - awesome stuff.

In order to celebrate Hallow's End, I have decided to share a player-made video that was posted up in the Bonkers forums that is a tribute to the Undead. Enjoy!

MMORPG'S - What are they?

As most people know, I'm a veteran gamer with a long track history in various online games. The World of Warcraft (WoW), which I am currently playing, is one of these. Specifically, WoW is a game that belongs to a specialised online genre called an MMORPG.

MMORPG - Many Men Online Role Playing Girls....

No, I'm just kidding - but don't laugh too much, you'd be surprised how many of the chic, stylish and scantily clad female characters running around are actually being played by guys. Ok, so the real definitiion of MMORPG is:

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game

Yah, but what does that mean?? The simplest way to understand an MMO is to describe it as a virtual world online, where individuals can create a fictional character to represent themselves. These characters are controlled by the player, and through them the player can interact with other players as well as interact with the virtual world itself. Contrary to popular belief, there is actually very little in the way of "role-playing" in MMOs where everyone walks around saying "Aye" and poorly imitating ye olde english, though there are some dedicated playing realms and player associations that not only encourage, but insist that everyone talk in character. Actually, the gaming culture (like many popcultures) has its very own unique language.

One of the most unique features of an MMO is that they are "persistent" - which means the virtual world is still operating even when the player is not logged into the game. So in other words, unlike regular computer games, you cannot save your game and return to the exact time/place where you left off - the virtual world keeps turning and is ever-evolving even when you are not there. It is very similar to how real life events continue to happen regardless of whether they are connected to you or not - for example, work still continues to function and happen even on your day off. It is this feature that makes MMOs a lot of fun as a player's interactions have real-time consequences.

The World of Warcraft
This is a fantasy MMO created by the gaming company Blizzard with over 7million subscribers world wide. It is set in the world of Azeroth where there are 2 main opposing factions (Horde and Alliance) who are constantly at war with each other. Players can choose to be on either Alliance side (humans, dwarves, nightelves, gnomes and dranei) or join the Horde (orcs, trolls, undead, taurens and blood elves). However, there is also many many overlords, dragons, undead scourges, demons and their minions populating Azeroth that both factions will come up against (these characters can not be played by people, but rather they are forces to be reckoned with that effect both factions and many of these denizens require teams of people to defeat). The game was first announced in September, 2001 and after 3years in the making it was released November 24th, 2004.

Here is the Cinematic trailer that came with the release of the game - featuring for the Alliance a dwarven hunter, nightelf druid, and a human mage. For the Horde, an undead warlock, an orc warrior, and a tauren shaman. These are amongst the few races and classes/roles a player can be in the World of Warcraft.

I have been playing WoW since before release, so whilst it was still in its Beta testing phase. The purpose of a beta tester is to play the game and report to the gaming developers anything you find wrong with it (for example, a quest or an ability doesn't work or the rotation of something is too fast/slow, even make comments on whether game rewards are appropriate for the given task or if certain combat encounters are too hard/easy for the target player's level). The gaming developers then take away these reports and use them fix and iron out as many problems as they can before the final launch of the game.

For more info relating to WoW, the game has inspired the creation of its very own wiki - so check it out here.

Currently, I play Hord-side as a Tauren Druid on an Aussie server called Dath'Remar in a guild called Bonkers. I'll be looking at druid specifics in the next few posts :)

Getting on to the good Stuff.

Hello people!

I've changed some of the font colurs as the bog-brown greens just weren't working with the blue colour scheme and I have also added:

- New links to the Links section on the left
- A movie viewer. Just click on it and it will play.

With most of the overall design stuff done, I'll be moving into putting up info and posts relating to World of Warcraft (WoW), especially info relating to the Druid class.
